Hikono is the only daughter of a paper wholesaler in Honshirogane-cho in Nihonbashi, so to speak, a young lady like a downtown girl. She wanted to paint, and visited Yumeji's shop, Minatoya Esoshi Paper Store, which had just opened in Gofukumachi, saying, "I want you to see the picture." Hikono-san 19 years old, Yumeji 30 years old, autumn of 1914.

It's about 10 minutes on foot to get to Minatoya Esoshi Paper Store. This female student, who was a dream fan, went to the harbor generously, but since Yumeji also came to the nearby banks of Kamakura, the area around Ichiishibashi and Jobanbashi in the back of the harbor became the places of Ose, gradually becoming intimate. It became a close relationship.

In particular, when Yumeji moved to Kyoto and became a long-distance love across the Tokaido between Nihonbashi and Kyoto, Hikono was called "mountain" and Yumeji was called "river" so that his father would not be disappointed. I continued to communicate until I called it. There are records of the subtleties of the mind, such as the passing of common long-distance love and the innocent anxiety.

If you read a book in which the relationship between the two was studied based on those remaining sentences, you can see that dramatic events like a novel story somewhere continued from encounters to eternal separation.

Yumeji is often referred to as a "lovely painter", but among the women he met, Hikono's different place was that she first liked Yumeji. In the fall of 1918, when I couldn't meet him, Yumeji, who was at a loss, returned to Tokyo and read Hikono's diary for the first time. At that time, I realized that I was loved more than I had expected, and I started writing a ridiculous book if I came up with something.

This book, at first glance, is a collection of short songs with no strangeness, and perhaps only two people who can only understand, are scattered in tanka poetry and illustrations. "Mountain" means Hikono-san. It's a book that Yumeji wrote for Hikono.

It is very surprising that such a book will be published, but when you turn around the page, you will notice that many memories of the current Chuo-ku are also recorded.

And at the beginning of the year, "Going to the mountains" came out to the world.

But Yumeji was not allowed to visit and couldn't meet easily, so I don't know if this book had come to her hands.

This last letter written by Yumeji with all his thoughts. A youth album for her, engraved with the trajectory of two living. Probably, I think Hikono read it. And I think he was happy.

No, Yumeji and Hikono are both artists. Hikono should have understood how hard Yumeji was to make this work and how much he felt. You must have been pleased.

 

About a year later, Hikono died. 23 years old and 9 months old.

This is a work called "Twelve Views of Nagasaki, Lantern Flowing", which is said to have been drawn by Yumeji for the first time after Hikono's death. It seems that the Ajiro pattern of the yukata represents Hikono-san. The cover of "I'll go to the mountains" is also designed with this pattern.

After this, Yumeji begins his life with the leaves, but he never forgets Hikono's features and loves the mountains, and the number of works depicting the mountains increases.
