Mr. Chuta Ito, designer of Tsukiji Honganji.
I made the basic design of the main gate of the University of Tokyo.
Good evening. It's "Take-chan."
On the middle day of the three consecutive holidays in early November, I walked around Hongo 3-chome. This area is the area where the University of Tokyo was built on the site of the former residence of the former Kaga Domain, and because of its influence, many literary artists set up their residences. When I was walking around the University of Tokyo, I was excited to discover a large statue of Josaiah Condor, famous as the designer of the first Bank of Japan (Nihonbashihakozakicho), and then I met the main gate of Tokyo, where "Chuta Ito", who designed Tsukiji Honganji, made the basic design, and was excited again!
Akamon is famous for the University of Tokyo. Nariyasu Maeda, the 13th Kaga Domain feudal lord, welcomed the daughter of the eleventh shogun Ienari Tokugawa in 1827 (1827). It is said that the red gate is the Gomoridenmon gate built at that time. At that time, when the third or higher daimyo greeted his wife from the Shogun's family, the person / residence was called the Imperial Palace, and the red-painted gate that entered and exited the place from the main street was called the Imperial Palace. According to customs of the Edo period, the gate was supposed to be destroyed when the princess died, but it died in 1868. Since it has already been a new era, this red gate has not been demolished and seems to have reached this day. It is Cultural Heritage where you can know the junction of history.
In 1886, Imperial University opened in Hongo under the university order, but at first Akamon played the role of the main gate. Around 1895, a "temporary main gate" consisting of wooden fences, pillars and doors will be placed at the current main gate position. After that, while the campus maintenance progressed, the decayed temporary main gate is too shabby, so construction of the main gate is planned. The current main gate was built in 1912 by the basic design of the professor of architecture, Chuta Ito, and the construction management of Kokichi Yamaguchi, the maintenance section manager, under the invention of the 8th Tokyo Imperial University, Oshin Nagahama at the time.
The gate of the University of Tokyo is not only Akamon.
