Introducing the new road nickname "Hakozaki Kita Niihori-dori"

Last year, two streets, "Suehiro Street" and "Hakozaki Kita Niihori Street", were newly named roads in Chuo-ku. Last month, we introduced "Suehiro Street", so this time we will introduce "Hakozaki Kita Niihori Street".

"Hakozaki Kita Niihori-dori" is a 450m street from Hakozaki 1-chome to 3-chome, along the Nihonbashi River from the side of Toyomi Bridge to the underpass of the Metropolitan Expressway. As shown in the photo above, there are few traffic and quiet streets.

The map on the lower left is "Chuo-ku Road Nickname Map", and "Hakozaki Kita Niihori-dori" is shown in pink.
The right is a map of the late Edo period. In the Edo period, it was called the Kita-Niihori Riverbank, and the Eitai Bridge was built at the end of the street.

Ukiyo-e by Hiroshige Utagawa, "Toto Famous Eitai Bridge Complete Map"

The ukiyo-e below is the Hiroshige Utagawa "Toto Famous Eitai Bridge Complete Map" on the information board at the entrance of the Sumida River Terrace.
At the side of Eitai Bridge in the Edo period, there was a Funate Bansho, and Toyomi Bridge was more upstream than it is now. There are shops like teahouses lined the eaves, and you can see many people walking along bridges and streets.

The current `` Hakozaki Kita Niihori Street '' is quiet with few traffic, but in the Edo era, it was an important road to Fukagawa, one of Edo's leading downtown areas, crossing Eitai Bridge, and there were many people coming and going. I can guess it was.

Highlights

There is "Takao Inari Shrine" on this street. Although it is a small shrine, it is a shrine dedicated to Yoshiwara's prostitute "Dayu Takao", and this shrine is also depicted on a map of the Edo period and on the entire map of the Toto Famous Eitai Bridge.

In addition, along the street there is a monument to the founding of the Bank of Japan.
The Bank of Japan opened in 1882 using the building of the former Hokkaido reclaimed messengers' sales office located at the side of the former Eitai Bridge, and moved to its current location in 1896.
This pioneering messenger sales office was designed by Josaiah Condor, and Kingo Tatsuno was also involved in the design. It was used as a meeting place after the Bank's relocation, but some of the buildings that were burned down by the Great Kanto Earthquake were relocated to Hamacho Park as a memorial hall to remember Josaiah Condor's achievements, and then burned down by the Tokyo Air Raid. It seems to have been

In addition, the Toyomi Bridge Tatamoto Observation Terrace, which opened last year, is a superb view point overlooking the Sumida River and Eitai Bridge, and the two reconstruction bridges, Toyomi Bridge and Minato Bridge, which span the Nihonbashi River, are also highlights.
