2019 Write by Nittoku of World Refugees
On December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly resolved that June 20 would be "World Refugee Day" every year. This day was originally "Africa Refugee Day" commemorating the entry into force of the OAU (Africa Unification Organization) Refugee Convention, but it was established to raise global interest in the protection and assistance of refugees and deepen understanding and support of activities by UN agencies and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) including UNHCR.
It is a day to praise the strength, courage, and strength of confronting the adversity of refugees who have been chased from their hometown, and call for solidarity in support of refugees. In cooperation with interest in refugees, the momentum and efforts to solve the problem in society as a whole, 15 landmarks nationwide, including the Tokyo Sky Tree, are lit with the United Nations color "blue". It has a slightly different impression from one of the usual lighting "Iki" (upper left image), which illuminates the pillars that pierce the tower with light blue light with the water of the Sumida River as a motif.
From Chuo-ohashi Bridge, you can see the brilliance dyed in United Nations blue.
