A moment of relaxation at lunch-Tsukiji Honganji Pipe Organ Concert-
There is a pipe organ in the main hall of Tsukiji Honganji Temple. From 12:20 noon on the last Friday of every month, a free concert is held as a lunchtime concert. I went to a concert in June, the 158th.
In this concert, the performers change every time, and sometimes there are not only organs but also co-starring with violin and vocal music. This time it was a co-starring with Alpa.
What is Alpa?
I learned about a musical instrument called "Alpa" for the first time. It is a small version of harp, and it seems to be a South American instrument. The performer was May Kotohira, and he met in Paraguay, South America when he went to Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. The sound also felt lighter than the harp.
The program was a short concert of about 40 minutes with Hanyu no Yado and Tears, Buddhist hymn, Alpa's famous song "Kaskada", but a full main hall audience was listening to wonderful music.
The Pipe Organ performance was near the entrance of main hall, and there was a distance from the alpa playing in front of main hall, and it seemed difficult to match the breath of the performance. Even if you look at the photos, you can see Alpa's performers quite far away.
Pipe organ made 50 years ago
The pipe organ is made in Germany in 1970. It was made of 2,000 large and small pipes (flute), and he tried to make the smallest sound and the loudest sound, but the moderator said that the small sound was really small and it was like the sound of a hearing test. I was told, but I thought it was strange to say it. The upper part of the keyboard is from the right, and the lower part is from the left pipe (?) It may be the opposite.
Since it was 50 years ago, there have been many failures in recent years and repairs are required, so the Pipe Organ Fund has been started this year, and a donation box has been placed at the entrance.
I think it's rare to have a pipe organ in Buddhist temples. I hope you will continue to resonate with beautiful sounds for a long time. The next lunchtime concert in July will be Friday, the 26th.
