Remotely navigate the beloved Chuo-ku, rosemary sea.

On Yaesu-dori, the road in front of Tokyo Station, there are about 180 stores of Yae Chika (Yaesu Underground Shopping Center) underground, but monuments also stand on the median strip above the ground.

It's

◎ Peace Bell

◎ Jan Jooss Ten Monument

That's right.

In addition, although it is not in the median strip, there is a monument near it.

◎ Giraffe statue

I will introduce it again.

This is partly duplicated with the previous introduction, but this time I would like to introduce this.

Then from the "bell of peace"...

I photographed the whole median strip of Yaesu Street.

The right of the four steps in the center is the "Jan Jooss Ten Monument", and the "bell of peace" stands in the center.

The back of the road (Yaesu Street) is Tokyo Station.

Peace Bell

It was built in the first year of Heisei in 1989 to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the Declaration of Peace City in Chuo-ku.

It is about 7m high and has 26 bells.

It is a Dutch bell that resonates with a beautiful sound every hour from 9 am to 9 pm (maishoji: just at the time).

I took a picture of the "bell of peace" from the bottom.

I don't know

Let's look at the preciousness of peace

A little happiness

  The prosperity

If the light of peace disappears

  Everything is lost

This brilliance in our hands

Let's pass it on to tomorrow's generation

March 15, 1988

  On this day

  I wish for eternal peace

  Chuo-ku is a peaceful city

  Declare that there is

The rings of the two compasses are combined into the shape of a celestial globe.

The compass is a symbol of Dutch open technology, which led the world at the time, and the celestial globe is also a symbol of "time."

The left head is the statue of Jan Jooss Ten, and the Dutch ship Leafde, which is said to have been on board when the sailing ship on the right drifted ashore in Japan.

At the top of the center is the mark of the Dutch national policy company East India Company at that time.

The design at the bottom of the center was used to indicate the direction on an old map, and is based on the sun.

The four corners are a pattern of waves = sea, which is also inspired by old maps.

(This is an explanatory note written under the statue of Jan Jooss on the left.)

  Jan Jooss Ten around 1557-1623

In 1600 (Keicho 5), he drifted to Bungo with William Adams and others on the Dutch ship Reefde.

He stayed in Japan as it was, gained the confidence of Ieyasu Tokugawa, and served to advise on diplomacy and trade.

His Edo mansion was given along the coast of the inner moat between the current Wadakuramon and Hibiya, and this land was named Yatsushiro Sugawashi after his name and continued to the Meiji era.

At present, the place name associated with Jan Jooss Ten remains as Yaesu in Chuo-ku.

(This is an explanation written on the Leafde on the right.)

The relationship between Japan and the Netherlands began with the arrival of William Adams and Jan Joossten.

In 1609 (Keicho 14), Dutch trading post was established in Hirato (later moved to Nagasaki) and continued to become Japan's only window for Western Europe during the isolation period.

The academics and artifacts brought by the Netherlands had a great impact on Japan, and became a major cornerstone of modernization in Japan after the Meiji era.

In particular, the historical relationship between Chuo-ku and the Netherlands is deep, and a monument will be set up here to commemorate the 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran, and this friendship will be preserved forever.

Jan Jooss Ten Monument

- Monument of a Dutch navigator who was active as one arm of Ieyasu

Jan Jooss Ten, who drifted ashore in Bungo, settled in Japan with the confidence of Ieyasu Tokugawa.

Together with William Adams (Anjin Miura), he worked as a diplomatic adviser and interpreter for Ieyasu, and engaged in the trade of red seals in Asia.

The place name Yaesu is derived from the presence of a worship house in his name.

The monument on Yaesu Street (central strip) was set up in the first year of Heisei (1989) to commemorate the 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran.

There is also a monument to Jan Joossten in the Yaesu underground shopping mall.

The above two images, the median strip, were taken in a distance.

In both cases, you can see the "bell of peace" in the center and slightly left.

And at the right end of the center you can see the "Kirin Statue".

We will also introduce the monuments that are not within the median strip, but are located at the corner of the intersection nearby.

This is a "Kirin Statue" by Tsumura's souvenir, forging sculptor Izumi Ando. It's 6.25m high.

In the past article shown at the beginning, I will explain a little more detail.

"Jan Jooss Ten Monument" is located in the median strip, on the center right of the map above, "Current Location" surrounded by red circles.

You can enter from the sidewalk of the intersection traffic light and appreciate the monument.

Of course, there is no problem. It's within the median strip, but it's a good place to enter.

The "bell of peace" is on the left side of the Jan Jooss Ten Monument, and on the right side there is the "plate" in the opening image.

The "Kirin Statue" is the upper right corner of the Jan Jooss Ten Monument, a blue star mark, and an intersection corner.
