Remotely navigating your beloved Chuo-ku, rosemary sea.

On Yaesu-dori, the road in front of Tokyo Station, about 180 stores of Yae Chika (Yaesu Underground Shopping Center) are located underground, but monuments are also standing in the median strip above ground.

That's

◎ Peace Bell

◎ Jan Jooss Ten Monument

That's right.

In addition, although it is not in the median strip, the monument near it,

◎ The giraffe statue

Let me introduce you again.

It overlaps some of the previous introductions, but this time I would like to introduce this.

The previous article is here.

From the Peace Bell...

I photographed the whole central strip of Yaesu Street.

The right of the four steps in the center is the "Yang Jooss Ten Monument" and the "Peace Bell" stands at the back of the center.

The back of the road (Yaesu Street) is Tokyo Station.

Peace Bell

It was built in 1989 to commemorate the "1st anniversary of the Declaration of Peace City" in Chuo-ku.

It is about 7 meters high and has 26 bells.

It is a Dutch bell that resonates with a beautiful sound every hour from 9 am to 9 pm (every hour).

I took a picture of the bell of Peace Bell from below.

I'm sorry

Let's look at the value of peace

Even small happiness

  Even good prosperity

If the light of peace is gone.

  Everything will be lost

This light in our hands

  Let's tell tomorrow's generation.

  On this day we

  I wish for eternal peace.

The 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran

  Jan Jooss Ten Monument

The rings of the two compasses are combined in the shape of a celestial ball.

The compass is a symbol of Dutch open technology, which led the world at the time, and the celestial sphere is also a symbol of time.

The left head is the statue of Jan Jooss Ten, and the sailing ship on the right is the Dutch ship Reefde, which is said to have been riding when he drifted ashore in Japan.

At the upper center is the mark of the Dutch national policy company East India Company at the time.

The pattern at the bottom of the center was used to indicate the direction on an old map, and is based on the sun.

The four corners are a stylized wave = sea, which is also inspired by the old map.

(This is an explanation written under the statue of Jan Jooss on the left.)

  Jan Jooss Ten 1557 ~ 1623

In 1600, he drifted to Bungo with William Adams and others on the Dutch ship Reefde.

He stayed in Japan and gained the confidence of Ieyasu Tokugawa, and was appointed to advise on diplomacy and trade.

His Edo residence was given along the coast of the inner moat between Wadakura-mon Gate and Hibiya, and this land was called Yatsushirosugawagi after his name and continued until the Meiji period.

At present, there is a place name named after Jan Jooss Ten as Yaesu in Chuo-ku.

(This is an explanation written on the Leafde on the right side.)

Relations between Japan and the Netherlands began with the arrival of William Adams and Jan Jooss Ten.

In 1609, Dutch trading post was established in Hirato (later moved to Nagasaki), and continued to become Japan's only contact point for Europe during the isolation period.

The influence of academics and artifacts brought by the Netherlands on Japan was great, and it became a great cornerstone of modernization in Japan after the Meiji period.

In particular, the historical relationship between Chuo-ku and the Netherlands is deep, and a monument is set up here to commemorate the 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran, and this friendship will be preserved forever.

Jan Jooss Ten Monument

- Monument to a Dutch navigator who played an active part in Ieyasu's arm

Jan Jooss Ten, who drifted ashore in Bungo, settled in Japan with the confidence of Ieyasu Tokugawa.

Together with William Adams (Anjin Miura), he worked as a diplomatic adviser and interpreter for Ieyasu, and engaged in the trade of red seal ships in Asia.

The place name Yaesu is derived from the fact that there was a worship house in his name.

A monument on Yaesu-dori (central strip) was set up in 1989 to commemorate the 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran.

There is also a monument to Jan Jooss Ten in Yaesu Underground Shopping Center.

The two images above, the median strip was taken at a distance.

You can see "Peace Bell" in the center or to the left.

And you can see a "giraffe statue" at the right end of the center.

The giraffe statue

It is not within the median strip, but we will also introduce monuments at the corner of the intersection nearby.

This is a "giraffe statue" created by Tsumura's souvenir, forging money sculptor Izumi Ando. It is 6.25m high.

In the past article I mentioned at the beginning, I will explain a little more detail.

The "Yang Jooss Ten Monument" is located in the middle right of the map above, "Current Location" surrounded by red circles, in the median strip.

You can enter from the sidewalk of the intersection signal and appreciate the monument.

Of course, there is no problem. It is within the median strip, but it is a good place to enter.

"Peace Bell" is located on the left side of the Jan Jooss Ten Monument, and on the right side there is a "plate" in the opening image.

The "Giraffe Statue" is the upper right corner of the Yang Jooss Ten Monument, a blue star sign, and an intersection corner.
