Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine Taru Sake Festival
The Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine, founded in 1625 in the Edo period (Kanei 2), is revered as a guardian deity of sake wholesalers.
Here, on December 27, the 6th Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine Taru Sake Festival was held.
Tasting of "downhill sake" and sale of barrel sake were carried out by six sake brewerys near Shinkawa.
This is the sixth event, but it has gained a reputation year by year and is gaining popularity.
We were able to see the prayers and the opening of barrel sake.
What is a descent sake?
"Descent sake" refers to sake that was made above Nada and Fushimi and transported to Edo during the Edo period.
The current area around Shinkawa and Kayabacho in Chuo-ku is an area that prospered as the largest collection of sake wholesalers in Edo dealing with such descent sake.
Every year, when young sake was completed in Nada and sake brewery in Fushimi, they were packed in barrels and then loaded onto a barrel boat, and sailed for the first ride toward Shinkawa in Edo, where sake wholesalers gathered.
This "ban ship competition" was widely known as an event to color the Edo townspeople's culture. It seems that the first ship arrived from Nishinomiya to Edo in 4 days.
