"Tsukiji Honganji Noryo Bon Dance Festival" Eco Volunteer Report
Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
The Tsukiji Honganji Noryo Bon Dance Festival was introduced by senior correspondents at the beginning of the month, but from this year, in addition to the feature of "the best in Japan", various eco-friendly initiatives have started!
In such a memorable year, I participated in Eco Volunteers.
(Click here for the article of Mr. Satoken, a senior correspondent who also participated in volunteering.)
Last year, during the four days of the event, a large amount of garbage was discharged in proportion to about 80,000 visitors.
And many of them were disposable tableware to provide food and drink.
In response to this, from this year, we decided to reduce garbage by switching from disposable tableware to reused tableware.
After the volunteer activities, not only did the reused tableware be effective in reducing garbage, but also as shown in the top photo, the garbage-free venue as if it were before the start of this tournament was impressive .
This seems to be very rare compared to the various events I have attended so far.
So what was done to maintain this beautiful venue?
This time, I would like to introduce some of them from the perspective of eco volunteer staff ^^
Watering
The work of eco-volunteer began with watering at 16:30.
Cool down the lit ground with the help of watering mainly for small children who came to the venue a little earlier than the company employee!
It's two birds with one stone that can be friendly to the earth while enjoying it like playing in the water ^^
After watering, not only did the ground temperature actually drop, but also visually cooled.♪
The wisdom of Edo, which can be easily practiced, wants to be passed on to future generations.
Eco station
At Eco Station, under the guidance of non-profit organization Environment Design Inst. ecotone (Ecotone), reuse tableware sponsors such as salesforce and those who have applied personally (neighbors) We have been volunteering happily with people who live and work, people connected to temples, university students, etc.).
According to ecotone, this year Nishi Honganji Temple in Kyoto started eco-friendly activities.♪
The main job is to ask visitors to cooperate in separating garbage and returning reused tableware, and to support sorting and returning.
I was the second volunteer at the Eco Station following Yoyogi Park, but as I get used to it, my eyes became stricter.
However, ecotone says that it is important not to force separation and return, but to "elicit kindness for separation and return".
The Eco Station reached its peak of busyness from 20:00 to 21:00, when visitors came home, but work was proceeding smoothly due to the unity of the teams at each Eco Station.
I think this is also due to the gathering of people who support eco-friendly initiatives ^^
In addition, Tsukiji Honganji seems to continue to carry out various eco-friendly initiatives as "a temple that participates in SDGs*"!
I can't keep an eye on the future.♪
*SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals. As a successor to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) formulated in 2001, the international goals from 2016 to 2030 as outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. (Reference: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "What is SDGs?") )
Packing work
This time, in addition to the Eco Station, I was in charge of packing reused tableware with ecotone and one eco volunteer staff.
Since ecotone is based in Kyoto, dishes are washed in Kyoto.
For this reason, we prepared to pack used dishes in boxes a certain number of boxes and send them to a washing factory.
(Cup with the salesforce logo to be packed)
At first glance, it may seem easy, but it may take a little time to see them, with different sizes, different designs, or similar cups of disposable.
But when you get used to it, it's a hand!
It will be fun to pack the reused tableware that is collected one after another.♪
This reused tableware has already been introduced at events such as the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka, which advocates zero garbage.
As a result of this initiative in this tournament, the amount of garbage has decreased by 40% compared to last year. (From a later date talk by Tsukiji Honganji)
With that in mind, it is clear how much reused tableware contributes to reducing waste. ^^
Next year, this tournament will be held during the global sports festival.
By then, it is expected that more and more people will be aware of this initiative, and that awareness of waste reduction will increase.
Fun volunteers until the last minute
After the volunteer activities, Tsukiji Honganji and ecotone gave talks, and took a commemorative photo with the eco volunteer staff on that day.
It was a young monk from Tsukiji Honganji who was in charge of photography.
At the time of shooting, he posed gassho like Tsukiji Honganji, and the shout was "Honganji".
But that's not the only thing!
There was a pattern of "yes, shaven" instead of "yes, cheese", and it was a fun volunteer activity until the end.
I would like to participate again if I have the opportunity next year.♪
