The old main pillars of Shimbashi and Kyobashi in Shinjuku

Sunday, December 29.

I walked along Chuo-dori in Chuo-ku for the first time in a long time.

⋯Before that, I went to Shinjuku and went to see the main pillar near the entrance of Shinjuku Gyoen.

It is said that the old main pillars of Shimbashi and Kyobashi on Chuo-dori are in Shinjuku for some reason. Knowing that, I wanted to go to see it someday, but at the end of the year, I finally went to see it.

The right is the main pillar of Shimbashi and the left is the main pillar of Kyobashi. All of them were built in the Taisho era. Bridges were built on the Shiodome and Kyobashi rivers, respectively, but the river was reclaimed after the war, the bridge disappeared, and now one of the four main pillars stands lonely in this Shinjuku area. State.

Why is the main pillar here?

About 15 years ago, it seems that there was a "Tokyo Michi Information Center" on the site next to Shinjuku Gyoen here, and it seems that the main pillar was the exhibit at that time.

The main pillars of Kyobashi are very distinctive, so the image remained well on the head, but the main pillars of Shimbashi were in this shape? There is only a strange impression like that.

Certainly, there was a main pillar in the old Shimbashi place on Chuo-dori, wasn't it?

I thought about it and checked it locally.

There was. It is next to the monument of Ginza willow.

According to Minato-ku's explanation, this main pillar is "a part of a bridge made of reinforced concrete with a length of 20m and a width of 27m in 1925" in 1925, so this main pillar is just 100 years next year Will be celebrated.

Shimbashi was replaced at the end of the Taisho era due to the reconstruction project following the Great Kanto Earthquake. Now that there is no bridge, only the name of the city "Shimbashi" is famous, but after the Great Kanto Earthquake, there was a bridge with a main pillar with streetlights as you can see.

On the other hand, Kyobashi.

Here, too, there is one main pillar of the Taisho era in the place of Kyobashi, which used to be built in the past. The main pillar with a characteristic shape and streetlights. Nearby there is a police box that imitates the shape of this main pillar.

A few years ago, I wrote an article about this main pillar seriously, so it is a very important pillar for myself, but unlike Shimbashi, this is a bridge that was replaced before the Great Kanto Earthquake. Therefore, it is also a main pillar that has stared at the disaster of the Great Kanto Earthquake.

The old main pillars of Shimbashi and Kyobashi in Shinjuku

Just 100 years ago, I think it was a time when everyone worked hard to recover from the Great Kanto Earthquake, but it can be thought that the starting point of the current cityscape was born from the reconstruction of the Great Kanto Earthquake. Maybe.

Next year, in 2025, the department store in Matsuya Ginza will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Ginza Street.

Not only Matsuya Ginza, but also in Chuo-ku, various things will be the 100th anniversary from now on.

It's a building.
It's a bridge.
It's a way.

It can be said that the current city of Chuo-ku is only due to the hard work of people 100 years ago.

While thinking like that, I walked around the city of Chuo-ku.

The 100th anniversary of each year. I hope you celebrate the hard work of the recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake.
