2025 New Year's annual mirror opening “mochi soup powder” behavior
At the Nihonbashi Eitaro Sohonpo, the New Year's annual “Kamikai” was held a little earlier from 14:00 on January 10, and the first 500 people were served with rice cake soup flour. This year, since the 11th is the weekend, it will be held one day earlier. At the stores, the sound of the festival music of the Intangible Folk Cultural Property "Edo Dai-Kagura" designated by Tokyo Metropolitan Government is played by Maruichi Senoshachu (Edo Dai-Kagura Preservation Society), creating a lively atmosphere and adding flowers to the event. Kagamibiraki is said to have the intention of lowering the kagami mochi, which had been offered to household miniature shrine and tokonoma in New Year's Day as the New Year's God's yorishiro, praying for sound health, sharing God's power, and wishing for good luck for the year. Originally, it was a samurai custom, and it was used to avoid using blades and break it with a mallet, etc., and it is said that it was called "Kagamibiraki". Some say that eating as "azuki juice powder" means to pay evil and remember the ancient red rice. It is said that it was held with the beginning of the New Year, such as the opening of samurai's feet, the opening of a storehouse of a merchant, and the beginning of a farmer's hoe. Since the Warring States period, during the New Year's Day, samurai called rice cakes with lucky items in front of armor as "Gufoot mochi (armor mochi)" and "Gufoot mochi mirror opening" was held on New Year's Day 11, but when this custom was spread and passed on among townspeople in Edo, the townman's house had no armor, so it looked like the whole kagami mochi. This decoration technique has been handed down from generation to generation at Eitaro Sohonpo, and the store was decorated with Edo offering rice cakes "Gufoot decorations" until the day before. It is a scene where you can feel the history of a long-established store that has been in business for more than 200 years.
