According to the founder Koki Watanabe, "Koshu" is "a servant who helps the general and guides graduates." At that time, the school was designed to train engineers between engineers and technicians, as the number of professional engineers and managers at production sites was overwhelmingly insufficient.
Founder Koki Watanabe (Hiromoto Watanabe / Koki, 1848-1901) was born in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture. He studied under Shunkai Sato and Yukichi Fukuzawa in Edo and graduated from Keio University. He has served as the governor of Tokyo and the first president of Imperial University.

"The purpose of the establishment is to establish a school to train technicians who should be assisted by professional engineers and plan the prosperity of Japanese industry. In the history, the opening ceremony was held on February 6, 1888, with the opening ceremony of the Commerce and Industry Apprenticeship Training Center in Kibiki-cho at the time being used for temporary school buildings (Note).
With a donation of more than 7,500 yen from Yataro Iwasaki, Kihachiro Okura, Kaemon Takashima, Ichibee Furukawa, Eiichi Shibusawa, etc., on May 7, 1888, Moto ‣ Tsukiji Hospital site building at 4-8 Minami-Odawaramachi, Kyobashi-ku, purchased a new classroom and relocated on September 7, the same year.
There are eight courses: civil engineering, machinery, electric works, builders (architecture), shipbuilding, mining, metallurgy, and manufacturing company secrets (chemistry). It was decided to speed up two years, one year for pre-training and one year for main course.
The number of current students was 228 in February 1888 and 609 in September 201010. The number of graduates was 121 at the first in July 1889, and a total of 888 by the ninth in July 1893. In 1928 (1928), it relocated to Oaza Kakuzu, Yodobashi-cho, Yodobashi-ku (currently Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku), completed the new school building, and changed its school name to Kogakuin. In 1949 (1949), he became Kogakuin University.
