There is a "Telegraph Creation Land Monument" in Akashicho. According to the monument, "On September 19, 1869 (October 23, 1869), the construction of a telegraph line of about 32 km connecting the Yokohama Court and the Denshinki Office (Tokyo Denshin Bureau) established in the Tsukiji Unshojo, began operations on December 25 of the same year. "

The name of the government office is "Den (den) Shin", and the fact that it is not "Telegraph" seems to represent the background of the times. At that time, the lucksho at that time was not the place where the current monument was installed, but around the restaurant "Jisaku" on the east side, there was a monument to the site of the lucksho.

In Yokohama, a monument established by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation on December 25, 1963 is located in front of the Yokohama District Public Prosecutor's Office (Nippon Odori, Naka-ku, Yokohama).

The Blege finger-shaped communication device was used in Japan's first telegraph business between Tsukiji and Yokohama.

The Breguet Finger Telegraph is a communication machine built in the 19th century by Breguet, France. When the transmitter lever is rotated to indicate the desired character, the needle of the receiver rotates and refers to the character.

The operation had the advantage that it could be used without special training, but on the receiving side, it was difficult to keep an eye on the needle pointing to the text. Therefore, in 1872 (1872), it was replaced by a moles-type telegrapher. (Refer to the Posts and Telecommunications Museum website)

Breguet is a watch maker founded in Paris in 1775. The founder's grandson succeeded in telecommunication in 1870 and devoted himself to the electric business. After that, it became a luxury watch brand under the Swatch Group.

There is a Nishiki-e from the early Meiji era depicting the area around the luck place in Akashicho. The picture on the right shows the direction of Shibaura from Akashicho. The building on the left is the luck office and the telegraph office, and it can be seen that electric wires are drawn from the telegraph column. The river flowing in front of it is the Tepposu River, and the bridge over it is Akashi Bridge. The scenery around this area is also depicted in "Edo Famous Places" and "Hundred Famous Views of Edo".

At present, the river and its land have been reclaimed, and the Akashi Bridge has been removed, and there is no remnant, but these Nishiki-e seem to bring back the modern Tokyo landscape 150 years ago. (@AM)
