As of 1617, "Asakusa Gobo" was erected as a separate hospital of Nishi Honganji Temple around Yokoyamacho, Chuo-ku. However, Asakusa Gobo was burned down by the great fire of the Meiryaku era in 1957, and it was the sea off Hatchobori that was designated by the government as an alternative land. It is the current Tsukiji that the monks of Tsukuda Island played a central role in reclaiming it. Needless to say, "Tsukiji" means "reclaimed land". Later, in 1679, Betsuin was rebuilt and was called "Tsukiji Gobo". The building at that time was facing the current Tsukiji Outer Market, and it is said that there were 58 small temples in front of the gate at its peak. The fact that there are still small temples in Harumi-dori St. and the out-of-market market is a remnant of those days. Later, it was called Honganji Tsukiji Betsuin, but from 2012 it became a temple under the direct control of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji school (Nishi Honganji Temple). head priest is the largest Buddhist dojo in the Kanto region where the master also serves as the master.

Tsukiji Honganji Temple was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and was rebuilt in 1934 by the power of many people, mainly monks. The current building was designed by Professor Chuta Ito of the University of Tokyo. Professor Ito has a friendship with the 22nd lord of the time, Kozui Otani, and has also participated in the Otani Expedition's Central Asia exploration. The influence is thought to be in the appearance of the current building, "ancient Indian Buddhism style".
