Shinohashi

Shin-ohashi Bridge is the third oldest bridge in the Sumida River after Senjuohashi and Ryogoku Bridge. It connects 2-chome Nihonbashihamacho, Chuo-ku and 1-chome Shin-Ohashi, Koto-ku.

There are two types of the name "Shinohashi": a theory that Senjuohashi is "new" and a theory that "new" based on the old name of Ryogokubashi (Ohashi).

It was first built in 1693 (1693), and in 178 years before it became a wooden bridge in 1871, it was damaged, washed away, and burned down more than 20 times, and the Shogunate also considered abandoned bridges due to financial difficulties. However, there was strong opposition from the townspeople, and in 1744 (flood control).

The Pratt Truss Bridge, which was built in 1912 (1912), was covered with iron plates, and was the only bridge over the Sumida River during the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923 (1923). It was also called "help bridge" and "human help bridge" because it saved many lives. At that time, many people evacuated to this bridge with their luggage, but as the fire approached, police officers who were present said that the luggage could cause the fire to burn, throwing it away from the bridge to the river. It is said that it prevented burning.

A monument is erected on the upstream side of the bridge on the Chuo-ku side of the bridge by those who have survived the disaster.

Shinohashi then repaired and reinforced, but the abutment was severely subsidence, and was replaced with the current Shaping Bridge in November 1976 (1976).
