[The 20th Excursion Series] Approaching Japan's first "Ginza" that hit the head family "Ginza"

Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
The other day, I went to Togoshi Ginza lunch with a volunteer friend.♪
There are many place names, street names, and shopping street names that include "Ginza" throughout Japan.
Therefore, there are many people like me who think, "Togoshi Ginza is one of them."

However, there are several historically interesting relationships between Ginza and Togoshi Ginza in Chuo-ku!
This time, I would like to get closer to the relationship.

Origin of Togoshi

First of all, let's take a look at the origin of Togoshi.
As a matter of fact, it seems that the exact origin is not known, but since it crossed the current Togoshi in the Edo period, it entered Sagami country (currently equivalent to Kanagawa Prefecture), it was called "Edo Cross Village" It is said that it became Togoshi from there.
On weekends, Togoshi Yahata Shrine, which is crowded with many worshipers, is engraved with an old song, "There is no day when the thread of Seijuan Negai on Shimizu crosses Edo."

I often used the word "Edo" when walking around the town, but Edo is said to be "the knee of the general", such as the place where the general is located and the surrounding daimyo residences are concentrated. I was vaguely capturing the range.
However, taking this opportunity to find out where and how far Edo was, I found a very easy-to-understand explanation in the Tokyo Metropolitan Archives "The Range of Edo-Oedo in the World, Yaohachicho"

According to this commentary, the interpretation of the area of Edo was different due to different administrative systems such as the town magistrate's dominant area, the temple shrine recommendation hall, the Edo payment place, and the bill stalking place, and it seems that there was no fixed boundary .
However, it is not good, so the Edo Shogunate announced its official opinion in 1818!
It is a range that extends to Nakagawa in the east, Kanda Josui in the west, Meguro Riverside including Minami-Shinagawa-cho in the south, and Arakawa and Shakujii River downstream in the north.
This range can be visually confirmed in the Edo vermilion map (Tokyo Metropolitan Archives) ^^

With this, I finally understood that Togoshi is located near the southern end of Edo.
He seemed to know the range of Edo and did not know the details, so it was a great harvest to be able to go one step further about Edo with the visit to Togoshi Ginza.♪

The edge of bricks

I've seen the origin of "Togoshi" so far, but why did you decide to get "Ginza"?
There was an interesting episode about bricks.

(Brick Ginza Monument)

Back in 1923. Ginza was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake.
It is said that Ginza, which was a brick street at the time, was having trouble disposing of brick rubble, but Togoshi took over the rubble and laid it down the streets of a shopping street that was poorly drained at that time.

You can learn a little more about such brick episodes with the guidance installed on the flowerbed on the east side of Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street.

In the upper half, there is a signboard of "Yukari between Togoshi and Ginza", where you mentioned the start of the refractory brick industry in an excursion article before, Katsuzo Nishimura, who is familiar with the monument of the birthplace of the shoe industry, and gas lights in Ginza You can also learn the relationship with

And in the lower half, valuable bricks used at that time are displayed, and you can see that they are engraved with SHINAGAWA.
It is said that this valuable brick could be exhibited by Shinagawa White Brick Co., Ltd. and the Takeuchi family, the landowner from that time, as the 70th anniversary of the birth of Togoshi Ginza.
I was impressed that the reused Ginza bricks could still be seen nearby like this!

And the important reason why "Ginza" was added to the place name, but in addition to the relationship that began with the brick, it is said that it was the result of the wish of prospering like Honke Ginza.
Togoshi Ginza, which is said to be the ancestor of place names including "Ginza", which is said to be more than 300 nationwide, is the venerable "Ayakari Ginza" born from the connection with Honke Ginza, on the official website of the Togoshi Ginza shopping street It is stated.

Togoshi Ginza, which was born in this way, has been temporarily turned into a pedestrian paradise and the underground telegraph poles have been completed, leaving the image of a good old shopping street. I also have a face as a shopping street.
And it is recognized as a long shopping street nationwide for 1.3 km!

This time, by taking a petit excursion outside Chuo-ku, I was able to learn about the history of Chuo-ku and new attractions.
It's finally the 20th excursion series, but there are many places I'm worried about but haven't visited yet.
In 2020, I would like to look for a connection with Chuo-ku in the Kansai region, which is almost unexplored.♪
