Nagasakiya Extra Edition (2)
I have introduced this blog several times about "Nagasakiya" where Dutch trading post Choichi stayed, but in February this year a new painting called "Nagasakiya Banquet Map" (1822, 1822) by Hoken Katsuragawa was discovered and purchased by Kanda University of International Studies. Since it was open to the public from November 1 to 14, it was visited and on November 14, a lecture titled "Read the Nagasakiya Banquet Map" (Lecturer): Prof. Kiyoshi Matsuda, Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University, participated in the event. I've heard an interesting story, so I'll report it briefly.
Known "Nagasakiya Nikai-zu" (Feirke brush)
Traditionally, this drawing is well known as a picture depicting the second floor of Nagasakiya, which was painted in 1810 by Jan Frederick Feirke (1770-1814), a surgeon with a trading house. This was exhibited by Nagasaki collector "Tokutaro Nagami" in the Netherlands Cultural Exhibition held at Nihonbashi Shirakiya in 1940 as "Edo Nagasakiya Second Floor Map". Unfortunately, I don't know where this picture went.
In comparison with Feirke's paintings, let's consider the two-floor hall map drawn by Hoken Katsuragawa in 1822:
1) According to the Dutch signature, the banquet was held on February 27, 1822 (April 18, 1822 AD). Director Blom Holtz arrived in Edo on February 5 (March 27) and had an audience with the general on February 15 (April 6). After that, the group interacted with Dutch scholars Hoken Katsuragawa, Gentaku Otsuki, Genshin Udagawa, and Sakuzaemon Takahashi at Nagasakiya.
2) 2 shoji door on the left side, tokonoma on the front and Tang paper on the right are wallpaper from the floor to the ceiling. The pattern of the wallpaper of Hokenzu and the Karagami of the Fusuma of the Feirukezu have the same pattern with clouds scattered. It may be a hobby of Genemon Ehara, who credited Nagasakiya. But the structure of the room is different from the two.
3) In the diary of the director of the trading house on March 21, 1821, Edo information was stated that "Edo had a great fire and our dormitory was damaged again." After this fire, Nagasakiya was rebuilt, so the composition on the second floor may be different.
Ten Banquet Participants
Genemon Ehara, who was 47 years old at the time, was a Japanese sitting directly on a tatami mat. Japanese-styled Blom Holtz and Fissel as hosts, Western-style Baba sitting in a chair, Hoken and Kamiya are guests. It is thought that the costume banquet where the guest fell was consulted by Kenshi Nagasaki magistrate's office and Genemon Nagasakiya, and was devised without spare money to teach the luxury lifestyle and manners of Edo to Shokan Choichi. I think Fissel, who liked the play, was in a good mood.
Fissels look out the white tabi of both feet from the hakama, black painted hats on the left side, and hand-made tobacco tray on the right side. The director of the business, Blom Holtz, has a tube in his right hand, puts a red-brown pocket on his left knee, and a hand-made tobacco tray on his left side.
Hoken wears a triangular cap and wears a red lock coat on a vest with embroidery decorations. The appearance of Sajuro Baba and Kamiya Gennai is basically the same as Hoken, but the hat is not Hoken's obsolete triangular hat but a trendy mountain high hat.
The play lover, Fissel, described this costume banquet as "I laughed at the Western Chiguhag." This is because Dutch clothes worn by Japanese people have been collected over time for a long time, and it was extremely strange to wear them together.
