More familiar to "unknown scientists and engineers" more than 500 years ago!
~ "Leonardo da Vinci" Exhibition @JTEKT ROOM Ginza ~
Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
In 2019, when various events commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, including the exhibition at the Louvre Museum in Paris, were held only one week left.
Did you know that in such a memorable year, an exhibition is being held in Ginza where you can learn about your aspects as a scientist based on his manuscripts?
The destination for the exhibition this time is JTEKT ROOM Ginza, located east of the Gunma General Information Center Gunma-chan family (Past Articles 1 and 2), which I have introduced several times before.
This is the showroom of JTEKT Co., Ltd., which manufactures and sells steering systems, bearings, drive parts, machine tools, electronic control equipment, etc., and is also a place to connect the past, present and future with JTEKT's history.
Here you can actually experience the convenience of an electric power steering system (EPS), which was first developed in the world in 1988, and learn about other products.
Electric power steering is an electric assist in the force required for steering wheel operation and reduces the steering force.
Behind the development is the spread of cars among women and the elderly, and if you actually try to have this assistance in simulation, you will find convenience and lightness in hand.
At first glance, the evolution of this car, where you can't see the relationship with da Vinci, was actually inspired by what was left in his manuscript!
The more you know, the more interesting it is! Tips from da Vinci who lives now
As I mentioned at the beginning, this exhibition presents the theme of science and technology, which he worked most enthusiastic about besides painting in his 67-year-old life.
The purpose of this research was to enrich people's lives and improve their standards by combining the power of nature (thermal, hydro, and wind), human muscle strength, and the power of machinery and tools.
As a painter who drew "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper", you may think a little unexpectedly.
In this exhibition, a part of the vast research note "Leonardo's Handmade" (facsimile version) that he left and a reproduction model are on display.
At the venue, you can get a "da Vinci Note" to explore the secrets of da Vinci that can be enjoyed by elementary school children and adults with a quiz, so I went around the venue while challenging the quiz.♪
Among the about 15 exhibits, in addition to the jacks that are familiar because they are also used in modern times, pumping power, intermittent motion equipment (a device that causes up and down motion one after another), a star tooth wheel (later used for astronomical watches), aerodynamic screws (screw-type propeller), a model of the principle of the computer, etc., are more familiar to modern life than expected.
Among them, the most interesting thing was this "automatic rotating meat griller"!
It is designed to use the gear skillfully, convey heat with a feather set in the middle of the chimney, rotate the meat, and burn the meat evenly.
Da Vinci thought, "If the fire is strong, the feathers will rotate quickly, so the meat will never break it."
While I wanted to actually bake and eat meat with this machine, I enjoyed watching the reproduction model (laughs).
And the sketches and reproductions of the printing press that he devised more than 500 years ago are also on display.
Unlike a splendid printing machine*, which was manufactured at U.K. in the 1850s, it looks simple, but it hides the unique ideas of scientists.
*For details, please refer to the article "Impression Experience at the Mizuno Printing Museum!" by Mr. Usako Tsukuda, a senior correspondent.
The Leonardo's manuscript, introduced in this article, includes a wide range of detailed contents from science and technology, astronomy, anatomy, urban planning, geology, botany, music, art theory, and personal notes.
Since 1872, a limited number of facsimile versions (reprinted versions) have been produced as a national business.
The originals are known for the names such as "Atlantico Hands" (Milan), "Paris Hands" (Paris), "Windsser", and "Madrid Hands" (Madridal), and are kept in great care at institutions in various countries.
But when it becomes as famous as da Vinci, some of its owners are famous!
In 1994, Bill Gates purchased an auction by Bill Gates in 1994, which mainly contains considerations about water movements and research on celestial bodies.
Now, Mrs. and Mrs. Gaitz have the originals.
As we have briefly introduced so far, there are a number of interesting researches, so let's take a closer look at the "ball bearings" that we devised from the research of friction and left in the drawings.
In the first place, ball bearings are bearings that reduce the friction force working against the force to move objects.
By putting a ball or roll inside, you can move things smoothly with small force.
This time, you can see the sketch and reproduction of da Vinci, which is said to be the prototype, up close, and pick up what is actually used now and know how it works.
Did you know that such "ball bearings" actually make our lives convenient and comfortable in a very familiar place?
In modern times, it is widely used in automobiles, bicycles, skateboards, aircraft, Shinkansen, wind power generation, sewing machines, etc.
Can you believe that a powerful ball bearing under the edge, which helps us make our daily life more convenient, was devised about 100 years before the birth of Edo shogunate?
I couldn't believe it at a glance!
And it is exactly JTEKT Co., Ltd. that pioneered the research and development in modern times!
Currently, at 150 locations in 29 countries around the world, we are contributing to social development through the development of new technologies based on advances in science and technology that originated in the invention of da Vinci.
Please take a look at the exhibition hall to see which parts of the car use bearings.
In the above-mentioned "Leonardo's manuscript", not to mention the contents described, but in fact, the way of filling out was also characteristic.
It means that the left and right, written using the left hand, are mirror image characters inverted.
What kind of intention did he have to attract modern people as a painter and a scientist?
While I was able to know that his ideas are alive unexpectedly, such as automobiles and wind power generation, the newly born mystery has increased interest in him.♪
Knowing da Vinci as a science and technology researcher may also change the perspective of painting. ^
And according to the gallery attendant, it was usually a place mainly for men to visit, but the number of women has increased since this exhibition started.
Until I went to see the exhibition, I was ashamed and didn't even know the word "bearings", but I was happy to have a welcome atmosphere that I could enter without resistance.♪
This is a valuable opportunity, so I would like women who are interested in the romance of science and technology living in the present age after more than 500 years to visit us!
At present, the exhibition hall is currently decorated with Christmas trees.
It can be seen from the outside, so please stop and pay attention to the ornaments when you come near.
You will notice that unique things unique to JTEKT CORPORATION are displayed ^^
Last but not least, thank you to the public relations staff who accepted the interview and photography in the venue for their cooperation.
