Finally, Beta City 2024 is approaching.
Please come to Nihonbashi Honmachi on Saturday, October 19 and October 20 (Sun) and look forward to it.
We, the members of Nihonbashi Honmachi 3-chome, are also steadily preparing to welcome all those who come to Nihonbashi.
Well, today is the continuation of the blog I've written so far.
It is the origin of the name "Betara City".

Let's visit the monument of Kanju Magome
Well, it's a continuation of the last blog,
I explained that Ebisu-ko will be opened on October 20 and the day before that, but if so, where is the name of "Betara-shi"? ?
Walking around the town is effective to know that.
If you walk carefully along the sidewalk of Showa-dori in front of Ozu Washi, 3-6-2 Nihonbashi Honmachi, you can find "Monument of Magome Kansoyu".
※Please refer to the previous blog for more information.
It's very hard to read, but I'll read it.
If you read the monument of Kanyu Magome at 3-chome Nihonbashi Honcho, you can read it carefully.
Along with sea bream and household miniature shrine used for Ebisu-ko, Edo's specialty Asazuke radish is sold, and the seller approaches the koji attached to the radish to the kimono of a young woman. It will stick to the kimono if you pass without buying it. "
The pickles that were sold seem to be derived from the name.
It feels like a very aggressive naming, but "Bedarazuke" named based on the above origin seems to be the origin of the name "Bedara City".
※In the past, there were no plastic bags, so it seemed that they were tied with a rope and carried it. That's why I got stuck.
If you look at the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, there is a similar description.
https://www.maff.go.jp/j/keikaku/syokubunka/k_ryouri/search_menu/menu/34_8_tokyo.html
According to the above site, the pickles loved by the common people in Tokyo were "Takuan" and "Bedarazuke".
Therefore, it is said that pickling is an important food in the sense that it played a role in the establishment of the pickle culture in the Edo period.
Betazuke has also changed with history.
As usual, I went to the book forest Chuo local museum and checked it.
According to Bettara City, a pickle market created by the people of the former Nihonbashi Ward in Tokyo.
Bettazuke was also seasoned with koji as written on the monument of Kanmu Magome during the Edo period.
Since the Meiji era, the price of sugar became cheaper, so it began to be seasoned with sugar, so it seems that it suddenly became sweet after the Meiji era (sugar was a luxury item in the Edo era).
The times have changed with the end of isolation, the opening of the port, and the Meiji Restoration, and since the Meiji period, inexpensive sugar has flowed rapidly.
It is said that Betazuke in Betara City has also changed.
If you only pay attention to pickles, you can feel the history. It's deep.
Finally, Beta City in 2024, the event is approaching.
I think some people have never come to the city yet.
I would like you to feel the bustle in the photos of last year, so I will attach the last year's pattern.
A major event that attracts many customers not only from Chuo-ku but also from outside Chuo-ku.
We, the members of the Honmachi 3-chome Azumacho Association, are also proud of this festival.
There are many stalls that are pickled in Tokyo's Shintakaya.
It's crowded with many people
It was really hard because I couldn't see this sight during the COVID-19 pandemic ...
Takarada Ebisu Shrine, which is not usually very noticeable, is also gorgeously decorated on this day.
This day is also a sunny stage for Takarada Ebisu Shrine.
Not only pickles, but also many stalls are lined up.
Takoyaki Okonomiyaki Shichimi pepper game candy There are really many stalls.
When I live in Chuo-ku, I'm really happy because I don't have such opportunities.
I would like to have fun with my children.
From the evening to the evening of October 19th, portable shrine also leaves.
portable shrine parades around Nihonbashi Honmachi and Nihonbashiodenmacho.
This year, October 19 and October 20 happen to be on Saturdays and Sundays, so I heard that there are many places where stores that are usually closed on Saturdays and Sundays are open temporarily. We want to excite this festival in the whole town.
This big Japanese lantern is the landmark of Takarada Ebisu Shrine.
There is no doubt that it will be a great place.
Please come to Nihonbashi Honmachi and Nihonbashiodenmacho to make memories of autumn.
